Shepherd’s Bush was originally pastoral land – a stopping point for shepherds bringing their livestock to market in London. The development of the West London Railway in 1844 and the Metropolitan Railway in 1864 allowed for a direct commute into central London, turning Shepherd’s Bush into a suburban residential area.
The large tracts of available land also made the area home to large exhibition arenas, stadiums, studios and entertainment venues during the early part of the twentieth century. In 1908 it hosted both the Olympic Games and the Franco-British Exhibition.
During World War II, Shepherd’s Bush suffered considerable bomb damage. In the post-war period, large parts were rebuilt, with the elevated Westway built between 1964-70. Also in the 1960s, the West 12 shopping centre and BBC Television Centre opened nearby. Film studios and media production companies continue to flourish in the area.
The Shepherds Building was likely constructed around 1960. It features a robust reinforced concrete frame faced in brick with a modular window system. It was built over a redundant branch line of the adjacent railway.
In 2000 it underwent a full refurbishment with an additional floor added, creating an 8-storey building. In 2014 a new entrance and refurbishment of central spaces updated the existing building.
